DEATHDREAM aka DEAD OF NIGHT (1974), Directed by Bob Clark, Rated R

Okay, now we’re getting back into the straight and narrow path of good ol’ horror. Here we have a film with quite a few official titles, such as:

Night Walk

The Night Andy Came Home

The Veteran

Whispers

Take your pick. This was commonplace back during the days of grindhouses and drive-ins. And can you believe that the man who directed such films as PORKY’S, A CHRISTMAS STORY and BABY GENIUSES began his career directing some (very good) horror films?

DEAD OF NIGHT tells the story of a young man killed in Vietnam who is essentially willed back to life by his living-in-denial mother. He returns home, yes, but something

is not quite right…in a way, this movie is a variation on the classic story THE MONKEY’S PAW.

Pretty good stuff, this. The acting is a bit spotty but adequate from the leads, but nothing major. It also boasts an intelligent, allegorical script and some make-up effects from the legendary Tom Savini (this is the first film to feature his work).

Let’s check out this nice, lengthy trailer that I hope doesn’t give too much away:

DEATHDREAM a.k.a DEAD OF NIGHT

Funny how the first part of this trailer is edited to make this look almost like an action film…but yeah. Good summary. Check this flick out. And if you like Bob Clark, I’ll have another flick of his on here later this month…one that is a bonafide classic in some circles.
