Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings — “Better Things”
This group, consisting of (mostly) white boys and the most soulful black woman seen in a decade, aims to be part of a revivalist movement to bring back the funk/soul sounds of the early 70′s. They reject modern digital recording and embrace the traditional analogue recording that was the zenith of soul. The Dap Kings also aim to use instruments that were only available during that time period.
The dedication has paid off.
They sound like a million bucks. Auto-tuning is just a bad dream Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings are waking us out of.
They’ve been around since 2001, but they sound like they’re only just getting started. Their latest single, “Better Things,” will be one of my Summer 2010 songs for sure. Don’t miss them.
