“DON’T SLEEP IN THE SUBWAY” by Petula Clark
Petula Clark of the “When you’re alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go…Downtown” Petula Clarks is a diamond on today’s playlist. Here she is with “Don’t Sleep in the Subway,” another song that’s just her telling a friend in New York City not to kill themselves. In fact, her whole album is so positive that it seems to have been recorded by a young hippie daisy girl who came to New York for only one day to make all these songs, brighten everyone’s day, and then leave before the bitterness consumed her too.
However, only closer inspection of the lyrics, “Don’t sleep in the subway, darling. Put aside your foolish pride, nothing’s wrong, now you’re beside me again,” leads me to believe this song is about her fucking a bum.
Either way, it’s very sweet to listen to, and it has that old song quality now that a lot of Mama Cass songs have, a positivity that’s so sincere, there has to be worms living underneath its surface.

I read your article and then I listened to the song as I was doing stuff (because I just returned from clinical)…it totally has that “hippie daisy girl” vibe you speak of. It brought me back to a simpler time and it was so peaceful. I could have napped forever listening to it. A very positive experience for sure. It’s nice you take time to appreciate these songs because they are very relaxing. It’s nice to be brought back to a calmer time.
A+
Oh Mama Cass…
