If you’re someone who thinks it’s still too early to be playing Christmas music, and/or you dislike Christmas music en toto, then I’d stop on by the 80′s department in iTunes and see a man about The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping.” Waitresses were one-hit album wonders, probably best known for “I Know What Boys Like.” They’re kind of like the whinier, not as prolific, kid sister to The Pretenders.
It’s a little sweet-and-sour gumball of a story, these lyrics. Girl loves Christmas, Girl’s had one hell of a shit year, Girl’s been beaten down so hard she’s almost not excited for Christmas, Girl spends Holidays alone, Girl forgets the cranberries to go with the turkey, Girl goes to an all-night grocery to get the cranberries, Girl meets Boy who is also spending the Holidays alone and also forget the cranberries, Girl loves Christmas again.
It’s far from the epic sugary-ness of “White Christmas,” but that’s the point. I love Christmas music, but the thing I also worry about sometimes is if I’ve heard it all. But every year, there’s forgotten cookies like this. Makes me jubilant.
