“I Can Stand a Little Rain” by Esther Phillips

I move today away from high energy jazz/funk into mellowed blues/funk.  Esther Phillips had her big heyday in the 70′s with today’s featured tune “I Can Stand a Little Rain,” as well as a discoed up cover of “What a Diff’rence a Day Makes.”

Y’know, I’ve been watching the First Season of Saturday Night Live on DVD, and they had some REAL great musical acts.  And they were not all the biggest names of the day.  Some of them were real finds, or just really esoteric.  Ms. Phillips appeared on the Candice Bergen ep, and they even had Rufus Wainwright’s papa, folk lord Loudon Wainwright III.

It just made it even more bizarre that SNL has gotten itself into the position is has with its music acts.  The Ashlee Simpson incident should never have happened.  Not just because of the pre-recorded track, but because she ain’t cool.

Listen to this one by Miss Esther and imagine a world where cool discoveries were still fit to be had at Studio 8H.
