M. Ward’s new (ish) instrumental track off Hold Time called “Outro (A.K.A. I’m a Fool to Want You)”.  It’s soulful, heartbreaking and most importantly, very LA-sounding with its faintest edges of surf rock peeking through.  It’s mostly a repeating series of chords (that’s most songs, really), but in this case, the repetition and variance on the theme really does sound like a man going at a helpless situation over and over again, with increasingly desperate results.

What is the right thing to do? How do you know when something still has life left in it?  The very words “I’m a Fool to Want You” haunt me.  I have a tremendous energy and wind at my back, but I’d be lying if I said this year hasn’t been a daily struggle to not feel like a fool for the things I want.

The instrumental-only-ness is particularly useful to me in keeping me thinking about me and not trying to solve the mystery of the song.  Well done, Ward.
