This is a terrible, terrible tragedy.
Many people die. There’s a hole in my heart to write that Perry Moore, producer of the “Narnia” films, and I believe more importantly, the author of “Hero,” a beautiful, groundbreaking book about a gay teenage superhero, has died at age 39.
He was found yesterday by his partner of 17 years, Hunter Hill, in their New York City condo. The early report on the cause of death is an overdose of Oxy-Contin.
I loved “Hero.” It’s been on my Gay & Lesbian table at Barnes & Noble for the past two years, and it consistently is the biggest seller. It’s a teen fiction book that isn’t bullshit, is very fun and positive, and Stan Lee himself was trying to turn it into a Showtime program a few years ago, to no success. It’s one of the first books I put in people’s hands when they ask for something different that I recommend.
I am furious. I am beyond furious at this news. Mr. Moore was a particular idol of mine. Happily partnered, successful, talented, a leader in gay entertainment. A great talent and a leading voice, just gone.
Heath Ledger’s death had a similar effect on me. An accidental fucking overdose. This is so irresponsible. So irresponsible.
The world needed Perry Moore, to say nothing of his family and friends. The world needed him. Just a waste.
Please read his book. I don’t know what else to say.
